Ryder Naim to join Pontiacs next season

The Bonnyville Jr. A Pontiacs continue to add more rising local talent to the organization.

Defenceman Ryder Naim has committed through a letter of intent to join the Yaks for the 2025-26 season.

The club had a similar announcement a few weeks ago, adding Bonnyville’s Rylan Emigh to the mix.

“Growing up in Bonnyville, I know what the Pontiacs mean to this community,” said Ryder Naim in a press release. “I am humbled and grateful for the opportunity presented to me.

“I am happy to be coming home, excited to play for the hometown fans, and helping the Pontiacs see success with the goal of bringing home a championship.”

The 5’10”, right shot, Bonnyville native spent last season with the U18 AAA Lloydminster Lancers, putting up four goals and seven assists for 11 points in 36 games played.

Naim also joined the Junior B St. Paul Canadiens for their playoff run last season, making an instant impact. He scored three goals and one assist for four points in eight games.

‘Lot of potential’

The OHA Edmonton product has been on the Pontiacs’ radar for awhile.

“His speed and offensive ability will be an asset to our transition game and fills a need as a right shot defenseman,” said general manager Chad Nelson.

“We are very excited to work with Ryder on his game this year and are proud to bring him back home to Bonnyville.”

Assistant coach Chad Carder, who worked with the team’s defence group and goaltenders, likes the instincts in Naim’s game.

“He’s a very good skater which enables him to maneuver out of many situations, as well as join the rush offensively,” said Carder.

“There’s a lot of potential there with his puck skills and IQ that has yet to be tapped into and we are really excited to work with Ryder and see how he develops.”

In an off-season with change at the head coach position in hiring Chad Mercier, the Pontiacs organization is getting more involved in Bonnyville as well.

They are planning on competing in the Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Chili Cook-Off on Friday.
