Cold Lake sees 200 evacuees check-in from north Sask fire

Cold Lake evacuee site

Cold Lake is acting as a reception site for evacuees from a Saskatchewan First Nation fleeing wildfires.

Around 200 evacuees Canoe Lake Cree Nation, approximately 240 kilometres northeast of Cold Lake, have checked into Cold Lake as a precautionary measure, the City said on Wednesday morning.

The evacuation was put in place on Monday, and depending on the course of the fire, could last a few days. Over 200 other evacuees have travelled to Lloyd.

“The City of Cold Lake’s Emergency Social Services team and Emergency Management team have been notified of this event and are ready to assist further should the need arise. At this time, no donations or extra volunteers are being requested,” the City says.

“We welcome the evacuees to our city and are confident that Cold Lake’s hospitality and friendly community will make your stay as comfortable as possible.”

Saskatchewan’s wildfire season has been aggressive, with multiple First Nations evacuated at the moment.
