Major Crimes Unit investigating after suspicious housefire leaves two deceased

The community of Elizabeth Metis Settlement has been shaken by a fire where two people where found deceased, and authorities have begun investigating whether there was foul play.

On Wednesday, Cold Lake RCMP received a report of a structure fire at a residence on Township Road 610 in Elizabeth Metis Settlement. 

Upon arrival, emergency responders were able to remove one resident from the home. However, they were deceased.  

Fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze, but the home suffered extensive damage. While searching, they found the remains of a second individual.

The Alberta RCMP Major Crime Unit has taken carriage of the investigation.

The remains of both people were taken to the Edmonton Office of the Chief Medial Examiner, who will work with the RCMP to positively identify the remains.
