Volunteers taking to the streets as part of provincial highway cleanup Saturday

Vermilion RCMP are reminding motorists that on Saturday, May 3rd, volunteers will be helping to clean up provincial highways across Alberta as part of the annual Highway Cleanup program.

Each spring, thousands of volunteers work together to help keep Alberta’s roadways clean, while raising funds to support local non-profit organizations. This year’s cleanup will take place on Saturday, May 3rd, and motorists can expect to see volunteers wearing bright safety vests as they collect garbage along highways throughout the province.

Vermilion RCMP is encouraging drivers to stay alert and use caution when traveling near cleanup crews. Please keep the following tips in mind:

  • Slow down when approaching volunteer crews.
  • Obey all posted signs and watch for volunteers near the roadway.
  • Be prepared for young participants — use extra caution.
  • Give workers plenty of space and remain patient while passing cleanup areas.

“Highway cleanup is a great initiative to remove unsightly garbage and materials from along the Highway.” Says Sergeant Corey Buckingham, Vermilion RCMP Detachment Commander. “Please pay extra attention to these areas this Saturday and slow down to ensure the safety of all involved volunteers.”
