ASIRT is investigating an individual’s death while they were in the custody of the St. Paul RCMP.

In the evening of March 18, authorities say the St. Paul RCMP responded to a call of an unwanted individual and found an intoxicated man.

An officer arrested him and, at 9:30PM, he was placed in cells.

At 10:25AM the next morning, the man was found unresponsive in his cell.

“Life-saving measures were attempted by police and emergency medical services, but he was declared deceased a short time later,” a press release reads.

ASIRT was then on March 19 directed to investigate, and they will examine the custody and care of the man.

No additional information will be released, ASIRT says.

“ASIRT’s mandate is to effectively, independently and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.”
