Tales from the Timebox with Doug “the Sportshound” Bassett for February 17, 2025
Before we dive into your Avalanche report, I wanted to give a big shoutout to the organizers, volunteers, players, coaches, and parents of the Ronald McDonald Winterland Invitational Tournament. Thanks for bringing the action to the A.G. Ross Arena and making it part of this fantastic event!

One Win, One Loss, and a Tie
Not too bad, I would have to say. Here’s how the Elk Point U13 Avalanche spent their Family Day weekend.
Friday Night Victory in Vermilion
On Friday night, the Avalanche travelled south to Vermilion to take on the Tigers, returning home with two points after an 8–3 win.
Workhorse Hunter ‘Hardrock’ Pankiw led the way with four goals and three assists. Hudson ‘The Bull’ Brousseau connected with two goals and an assist. Big power forward ‘Fearless Frank’ Killiam added another two goals. Tor ‘The Tornado’ Aarbo and his cousin Stetson ‘Shack’ Reynolds each contributed an assist. Goalie ‘Major Tom’ Melnyk faced 29 shots in the game.
Saturday’s Loss Against Lloydminster
On Saturday, the U13 Avalanche took a trip over to the Border City to take on the big Blazers team, losing a tight-checking game 6–4.
The Bull and Fearless Frank each scored a goal and added an assist. Jayden ‘The Shark’ Sakowsky and Grayson ‘Big Bang’ Koppang also found the back of the net. Hardrock ground away in the corners, picking up three assists. The Tornado and rookie from the farm team, Jase ‘The Jackal’ Malo, both added an assist. Goalie ‘General Lee’ Barstad faced 30 shots in this game.
Sunday’s Tie in Mallaig
On Sunday, the U13 Avalanche were on the road once more, this time travelling northwest to Mallaig to take on the Monarchs. The game ended in a 4–4 tie.
The Bull led the charge with two goals and two assists, while Hardrock also netted two goals. Fearless Frank, Hudson ‘The Hammer’ Krankowsky, Delany ‘Downtown’ Swedgen, Ethan ‘The Big E’ Lorenson, and Shack all contributed with an assist.
U18 Avalanche Earn a Road Win
Saturday night, while most of us sat on the edge of our couches watching Canada vs. USA, our U18 Avalanche team travelled to Vegreville to take on the Wranglers. At least the trip was worthwhile, as the Avalanche returned home with a 3–1 win.
Brendon ‘Buzz Saw’ Kadutski scored twice, while rookie ‘Wild Wyatt’ Fontaine, up from the U15 farm team, added a goal. Madden ‘Mad Dog’ Flamand tallied two assists. Kaleb ‘Formula One’ Flamand, Kaysen ‘Dynamite’ DeMossiac, and Gavin ‘Greenlight’ Kadutski each chipped in an assist. Goalie Drayden ‘The Wall’ Skakum shut the door on the Wranglers.
U11 Avalanche Dominate in Provost
On Sunday, the U11 Avalanche team travelled south to Provost to take on the Blades, securing a 13–8 win.
Team captain Jase ‘The Jackal’ Malo notched a triple hat trick. Cohen ‘Big Horn’ Brousseau and Aspyn ‘Machine Gun’ Kelly each scored twice. Raiden ‘Radar’ Savadra added an assist, while goaltender Benny Boy Saddleback faced 42 shots in the victory.
Upcoming Games
This coming Saturday, the U11 Avalanche team will once again face the Blades, this time in our barn at 11:45 a.m. Then on Sunday, the U11 Avalanche will be on the road to meet the Lloydminster Blazers.
The rest of the Avalanche teams have finished or are close to finishing their regular season and will be receiving their playoff schedules in the next few days.
