Avalanche Hockey Weekend Recap: From intense battles in Smoky Lake and Hughenden to exciting moments on home ice, the U18, U15, U13, U11, and U7 Avalanche teams showcased their skill, determination, and team spirit in another action-packed weekend of hockey!

U18 Avalanche: A Weekend of Highs and Lows

Friday Night in Smoky Lake
Friday night saw the U18 Avalanche boys travel two hours to Smoky Lake for a tightly contested battle against the North Stars. The game was tied 5-5 late in the second period and remained that way for much of the third until the North Stars netted a late goal, holding on for a 6-5 victory.

Crawford, nicknamed “Top Gunner”, led the Avalanche with two goals and an assist. Quinton Quinney “Rampage”, Brendan Kadutski “Buzz Saw”, and Morgan “Without a Trace” each added a goal and an assist. Gavin Kadutski “Green Light” recorded two assists, while Anton Braithwaite “A-Bomb” contributed one assist. Goaltender Drayden Skakun “The Wall” faced 32 shots, keeping the Avalanche in contention until the end.

Sunday Clash Against Cold Lake Ice
On Sunday, the Avalanche hosted the Cold Lake Ice in a much-improved road situation. They came away with a 5-1 victory. Captain Kaleb Flamand “Formula One” led by example with two goals and an assist, avoiding any penalties throughout. Braithwaite and Crawford each added a goal and an assist, while Gavin Kadutski scored one. Quinney and Morgan both tallied two assists. Goalie Charlie Lesyk “Goodyear Charlie” held a shutout until a late Ice power-play goal. The game was marked by frequent penalties, with the box rarely empty outside of a 15-minute stretch in the second period.

 

U13 Avalanche: Battling Hard in Hughenden

Saturday Game Against Hughenden Jets
The U13 team travelled to Hughenden on Saturday, losing a hard-fought match to the Jets 4-2. Hunter Pankiw “Hardrock” notched a goal and an assist, while Frank Killiam “Fearless Frank” scored the other Avalanche goal. Hudson Brousseau “The Bull” and Lennox St. Arnault “All Out” each added an assist. Goalie Lee Barstad “General Lee” faced 28 shots, standing strong in net.

Sunday Game Rescheduled
Due to dangerous road conditions, Sunday’s game against Irma was postponed and will be rescheduled.

U15 Avalanche: Facing Tough Opponents

The U15 Avalanche also travelled to Hughenden, playing against the Provost Blades. They came up short, losing 5-2. Tristan Brousseau “Bobcat” scored both goals for the Avalanche, with assists from Grayson Skakum “Grinder”, Liam Swedgen “Sledgehammer”, Remington Reynolds “Steel”, and Jaxon Smith “Smitty”. Theo Loughran-Quinney “Longhorn” faced 27 shots in goal.

U11 Avalanche: Taking on the Tier Two Giants

Saturday Match Against Kitscoty Knights
On Saturday, the U11 Avalanche hosted the Kitscoty Knights, the top team in their league. Despite moving up to tier two only recently, the Avalanche have shown significant improvement. Goalie Benny Saddleback faced an incredible 44 shots, with excellent support from the defensive core.

Jase Malo “The Jackal” scored twice and assisted on a goal by Thomas Morris “The Tank”, who capitalised on a doorstep opportunity. Kael Large “Hurricane Kael” added a highlight-worthy goal, hammering a one-timer off a faceoff won cleanly by Maximus Liliberte “To the Max”.

Sunday Game Rescheduled
The Sunday match against the Lloydminster Blazers was postponed due to road conditions.

U7 Avalanche: Early Risers Take the Ice

Saturday morning saw the diehard U7 Avalanche take on the Onion Lake Border Chiefs at 8.30 a.m. Both teams arrived bright and early, eager for action. The young Avalanche players continue to improve every week.

Next Saturday, the U7 and U9 teams will host a half-ice tournament at the AGR. Arrive early to find parking—or be prepared to walk a few blocks. Word has it Santa might even make a special appearance!
