SPORTSHOUND: Dashing through the Snow
Tales from the Timebox for November 26, 2024
Not the wind or rain, nor sleet or blowing snow can stop them. The mail must come through. Okay, maybe a mail strike can stop it! But not much has ever been able to prevent a minor hockey game. However, I must admit that I was surprised there were a few canceled games this past weekend. Maybe it was because it was the first snowstorm of the year, and people had to adjust. A few weeks from now, for sure, a little cold weather and snow will not stop the minor hockey world. On Sunday, things looked a whole lot better, and two of our Elk Point teams did play.
U11 Avalanche
The U11 Avalanche battled the roads and travelled south to Provost to take on the Blades, putting up a great fight in a 9-7 loss. This game was tied 7-all at the end of the second period, with the Blades scoring two goals in the third period to take the win. Our players ran out of steam a bit in the third period, but don’t forget, the U11 team was moved up to Tier 2 from Tier 4, so it was a big jump for them. But guaranteed, they will be up to speed by Christmas. Team captain Jase “The Jackal” Malo found the twine with four goals and assisted one other. Aspyn “Machine Gun” Kelly scored a hat trick. “Jumbo Jay” Large and his cousin “Hurricane Kael” Large each had one assist. Goaltender “Benny Boy” Saddleback faced 29 shots, keeping the team in the game until the very end.
U13 Avalanche
The U13 Avalanche buried the Mallaig Monarchs 11-3 here on home ice. Everyone on the team contributed to the win. Hudson “The Bull” Brousseau broke out of the pen, charging the net with six goals and two assists. Big power forward “Fearless Frank” Killiam and the free-wheeling defenseman Lennox “All Out” St. Arnault each added two goals and two assists. Hunter “Hardrock” Pankiw scored a goal and had two assists. Blueliners Mikey “The Beast” L’Heureux and Hudson “The Hammer” Krankowsky each had two assists. Kadence “The Sundance Kid” Blacklock, Grayson “Big Bang” Koppang, Jaydn “The Shark” Sakowski, and Ethan “The Big E” Lorenson all recorded assists. Strong forechecking by Stetson “Shack” Reynolds and Delaney “Downtown” Swedgen created many turnovers. Behind the mask, doing a terrific job of keeping the puck out, goaltender “General Lee” Barstad was holding down the fort.
