Mayor Craig Copeland of Cold Lake Honoured with Alberta Municipalities Distinguished Service Award

The City of Cold Lake is celebrating a significant achievement as Mayor Craig Copeland has been awarded the Alberta Municipalities Distinguished Service Award. This prestigious honour recognizes leaders across Alberta who have demonstrated innovation and distinction in their municipalities and communities.

Mayor Copeland’s journey in public service began in 2004 when he was first elected to the City Council. His leadership has been instrumental in Cold Lake’s transformation and growth, with the population increasing by over 35% during his tenure. After serving one term as a councillor, he was elected Mayor in 2007 and has since been re-elected five times, continuing his dedicated service to the community.

One of Mayor Copeland’s hallmark achievements is addressing the city’s infrastructure deficits. Through strategic revenue increases, he was pivotal in securing the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range Agreement, which brought in more than $125 million in revenue. This financial boost enabled numerous significant projects, including developing the Cold Lake Energy Centre, overhauling Kinosoo Beach, and various infrastructure upgrades.

Mayor Copeland’s commitment extends beyond infrastructure. He has been a staunch advocate for youth opportunities and has worked tirelessly to foster strong relationships with local leaders and organizations. His active participation on various boards and committees showcases his dedication to making Cold Lake a better community.

In addition to his mayoral duties, Copeland manages the Cold Lake Fish Hatchery, overseeing the province’s fish stocking and zebra mussel prevention programs. With a background in Fish and Wildlife, he is well-versed in Cold Lake’s natural treasures and its 25 different species of fish.
