WATCH: Terry Fox Run continues Marathon of Hope

An annual staple in the autumn calendar is approaching.

The Terry Fox Run is slated for Sunday, September 15 in various communities, and schools all pick dates within a two-week timeline to participate in the Marathon of Hope.

It’s one of the most remarkable fundraisers, having raised over $850 million since 1980 towards cancer research.

“Forty-four years later look at this thing– it’s on the Canadian calendar,” said Bonnyville run organizer Les Parsons.

“Evelyn Campeau got this thing started…It’s her run, I’m just doing it to support the community. It’s a big thing in my life. I darn near died from cancer.”

Bonnyville’s run will happen on Sunday, Sept. 15 around Jessie Lake, but just because you can’t attend on specific run doesn’t mean you can’t participate.

Through online coordination, the avenues to make a pledge have exploded, as everyone has been impacted by cancer in one way or another.

“It can be any day…some people just go out of their house with a stroller, they might do a block on Tuesday night. Some might walk on a gravel road,” said Parsons.

“We only get a few dozen people here, but we raise thousands of dollars from people who just do it at home whenever they want.

“Just get ‘er done.”
