Great artist Alex Janvier dies at age 89

World-renowned artist and one of Canada’s greatest painters, Alex Janvier, died today.

The Cold Lake First Nations man was 89.

His family confirmed the news on social media this morning.

He is considered one of Canada’s greatest painters and was ground-breaking. He was a member of the “Indian Group of Seven” movement who created Indigenous art and showcased it in the mainstream art world. He was the last living member of the group.

The Alex Janvier Gallery on CLFN continues to be visited regularly and showcases many of his great pieces.

Janvier was born on February 28, 1935 in Le Goff.

His work has inspired countless artists and painters and been recognized in a variety of ways, including being a member of the Order of Canada and received the Alberta Order of Excellence and Governor General’s Award for Visual and Media Arts.
