On Friday, June 14, 2024, the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta officially removed Mayor Gregory Throndson from the Town of Vermilion Council, effective immediately. This decision follows violations of the Municipal Government Act (MGA) and the Local Authorities Elections Act, which prohibit municipal officials from owing the municipality over $500 for more than 90 days. Failure to comply requires either resignation or a court decision, leading to Throndson’s removal.

The Town of Vermilion Council expressed its commitment to serving residents and maintaining governance standards. A spokesperson noted that “Council is mandated to follow the rules of the MGA and the Local Authorities Elections Act.”

Previously reported by Michael Menzies on Lakeland Connect, the council unanimously decided to sanction Mayor Throndson during a special meeting on April 30. These sanctions significantly limited his roles and responsibilities for the remainder of his term, which began in 2021. The Town’s press release emphasized their dedication to justice, fairness, and accountability, noting that the actions taken were to uphold the integrity of the community.

The sanctions stemmed from a March 2023 incident where Throndson was found to have violated the Code of Conduct by kicking a door, rendering it non-functional. Amid these developments, the Town has appointed Michael van der Torre, Director of Community Services, as the interim Chief Administrative Officer following the resignation of CAO Kevin Lucas.

The Town of Vermilion remains focused on ensuring effective leadership and governance for its residents.
