Although it’s roughly 20 months away, preparation meetings for the 2026 Alberta Winter Games coming to the Lakeland are underway.

Key stakeholders for each community involved, Cold Lake, Bonnyville, Glendon, M.D., got together in Bonnyville on Thursday to start plotting where each event will take place.

Cold Lake Mayor Craig Copeland said it takes a lot of discussion.

“We’re going to talk about locations for different events. What is the best location for this sport or that ,and make a decision where hockey is going to be, figure skating, etc, etc, or at least make an idea,” said Copeland.

“Some are obvious, but things like, where should biathlon be at?”

Copeland added that advertising will be going out for a Games Manager position who will do a lot of the legwork leading up to the games.

The local municipalities came together on a Regional Sports Tourism Committee with the purpose of bringing premier sporting events to the area, including the bid for these Games.

The Lakeland hosted the Games in 2010.
