SPORTSHOUND: U15 Avalanche undefeated season ends at the Provincial semi-finals

For the second year in a row, the U15 Elk Point Avalanche team won the North East league and represented the league in the Provincial finals. Last year they brought home the first provincial gold medal won by any Elk Point Minor hockey team since the 1995 Bantam Lightning team. But not so this year.

After a terrific season, the team went undefeated and played in Delburne for the finals this past weekend. With a record of one win, one tie, and a loss in the round-robin, they just missed going to the semi-finals.

Fans cheer on the U15 Avalanche at Provincials

We are still very proud of our team and coaching staff. A big thanks goes out to head coach Jeff Morgan. If I’m not mistaken, this is the fourth provincial final tournament in which he has led the team. He is also our Elk Point minor hockey president. Assistant coaches Shane Smith and John Grykuliak both work hard to prepare the team on and off the ice. And, of course, our team manager, Brittany Brousseau, who does all the work behind the scenes. Booking games, lining up on-ice and off-ice officials, road trip meals, rooms, transportation, etc., etc.

U18 head to Provincials this upcoming weekend

Usually, if you’re good, the Easter Bunny will bring you chocolate eggs on Easter Sunday. We hope he will bring us a shiny gold medal this year at Elk Point. The U 18 tier #3 Elk Point Avalanche are playing in the provincial finals in Mallaig this coming weekend. Their first game is Good Friday at 8 am against Kneehill. Then they play again on Friday right after the opening ceremonies at 6:45 pm against Valleyview. Their third and final game will be Saturday afternoon at 3:30 pm against Glenlake. The semi-final and gold medal final will be Sunday. It’s a short hop over to Mallaig…. so just like Peter Cottontail… hop over and cheer on the boys!
