Alberta Government’s Three-Vear Capital Plan Raises Concerns: No Funding Allocated for Highway 28 Improvements

The recent announcement of the Alberta Government’s three-year capital plan has sparked concerns among members of Council for the Town of Bonnyville due to the absence of funding earmarked for much-needed improvements on Highway 28.

Highway 28, a vital transportation artery connecting communities in the Lakeland, has long been plagued by safety issues and infrastructure deficiencies. Despite repeated calls from local leaders,  businesses, and residents for improvements to address safety concerns and accommodate growing traffic volumes, the capital plan unveiled by the Alberta Government falls short of allocating any funding toward this critical project.

The omission of funding for Highway 28 improvements in the capital plan is deeply disappointing and raises serious questions about the government’s commitment to addressing our region’s infrastructure needs. With the population and economic activity in Bonnyville and Northeast Alberta continuing to grow, the neglect of essential transportation infrastructure poses significant risks to public safety,  hampers economic development, and undermines the overall well-being of our communities.

Local leaders and stakeholders have voiced their frustration and disappointment over the lack of funding for Highway 28 improvements, emphasizing the urgent need for action to address longstanding infrastructure challenges. In the wake of this announcement, calls for the Alberta Government to reconsider its capital allocation priorities and prioritize investments in critical infrastructure projects like Highway 28 have grown louder.

As representatives of the Town of Bonnyville community, we urge the Alberta Government to listen to the voices of local residents and stakeholders, recognize Highway 28’s importance to our region’s prosperity and safety, and allocate the necessary funding to initiate long-overdue improvements without further delay.
