Cold Lake RCMP promotes CAPTURE camera registry program

Cold Lake RCMP are encouraging residents and businesses to sign up for a free program that could assist police apprehending suspects.

The program, called CAPTURE, would see those with surveillance cameras be able to easily and voluntarily submit video clips as part of RCMP investigations.

It then allows officers to evaluate the video footage before deciding to ask for a copy, but it doesn’t mean this information is public.

The Community Assisted Policing Through the Use of Recorded Evidence has been successful in other communities, the Cold Lake detachment says.

To get started, you’d visit www.ruralalbertacapture.ca and create an account.

From there, you can enter your contact information and video cameras on the secure site. Your information is not available to the public. If an officer needs to contact you, they will do so by the information provided, police say.

The program is completely voluntary and consent can be withdrawn at any time, plus that video footage remains your property.

The RCMP will not have live access to your camera feed. They will only ask for videos already recorded.

You can share your video footage through the website for an officer to view before they decide if the video will help in their investigation.

An officer can provide you with a USB thumb drive to copy your video. An officer cannot download the video; they can only view it.

This strategy is another way the Alberta RCMP is working with communities to help solve crime faster, together.
