A stolen vehicle investigation took Mounties in Vermilion looking out of province to catch a suspected criminal.

On Saturday, Dec. 16, Vermilion RCMP were conducting pro-active patrols within the town and observed a suspicious vehicle.

Police queries were done, which showed the vehicle stolen out of British Columbia.

RCMP initiated an investigation and subsequently identified a male who had recently arrived in the reported stolen vehicle. During the investigation, the driver provided a fraudulent name in attempts to elude police.

As a result of the investigation, Joel Vandecaveye, 33, a resident of Alix, was charged with:

  • Obstruct police officer;
  • Fail to comply with release order;
  • Identity fraud;
  • Possession of illegal (non-taxed) cigarettes.

Vandecaveye was taken before a Justice of the Peace and remanded in custody with the next court date set for Jan. 9, 2024, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Lloydminster.

“Recovery of this reported stolen vehicle was a direct result of our Detachment’s pro-active policing efforts. Kudos to the members involved.” says Sergeant Corey Buckingham of Vermilion RCMP.
