Local educators win Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence
A pair of local teachers have achieved a high honour, being named winners of the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence.
Leanne Jordison, a Kindergarten teacher at Duclos School in Bonnyville, and Chantal Sakowich, teacher at Assumption Jr/Sr High School in Cold Lake, both earned the honours after being nominated by their peers.
The award recognizes, “their remarkable achievements in education and for their commitment to preparing youth for a digital and innovation-based economy.”
“Leanne’s drive and ability to reach each of her students and bring the best out of them is exemplary,” said Duclos School Principal Jody Centazzo, as part of Mrs. Jordison’s nomination package.
Meanwhile, Sakowich was nominated in the STEM category and has been teaching since 2003. Prior to taking on the role of Classroom Support Teacher at AJSH in Cold Lake, Sakowich taught math, science, and religious education.
“I’m not sure I’m deserving of this honour, but I’m grateful to the teachers and the leaders who have encouraged me and believed in me throughout my career,” Sakowich said.
