Vermilion RCMP see VISA scam growing

A new scam seems to be targeting Vermilion residents.

Vermilion RCMP are warning the public of multiple reports of area-citizens receiving a voice recording advising the caller that there is “unusual activity detected on [their] VISA account” with thousand dollar purchases from online retailers, police said on Thursday.

While some recordings have asked callers to “select 1” to be put in contact for customer service, other calls have simply dropped without any further interaction.

Scammers often use phone or text messages as a means to access resident’s information to defraud them.

Police remind people to ignore phone calls from unfamiliar area codes or are international, if a caller suggest there has been unusual activity in your banking.

In texts, do not follow unfamiliar links.

If you’re unsure, call your bank directly.

Victim of frauds are urged to visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca
