Cold Lake Fighter Jets repeat as AFL champions

Cold Lake first team to win back-to-back championships in 16 years.

The Cold Lake Fighter Jets are off to Nationals, after winning Saturday night’s championship game against the Airdrie Irish.

It was a 39-18 win for the Cold Lake Fighter Jets at the Thomas Varughese Field and general manager, Damen Schaub, said it was a great game.

“We didn’t get too down on ourselves, and it was an awesome feeling,” said Schaub.

Cold Lake has been unbeatable so far at home, going 17-0 since the franchise began.

During warm-up Fighter Jet Gabriel Tinoco, said they were ready to finish business.

“We knew we would be here. We put a target on our backs earlier in the season and we held strong so it’s time to finish strong,” said Tinoco.

The Jets started off the first two-quarters strong, playing hard on defence and keeping the Airdrie Irish away from the endzone. The Cold Lake Fighter Jets started the half ahead 26-6.

The Jets preached coming together and having each other’s back.

“The only way we were gonna win, is if we were all on the same page and helped each other battle through adversity,” said Schaub.

The third and fourth quarter of the game was played steadily, keeping their goal of winning and taking the title of AFL champions a possibility.

“The boys really played together as a team, it’s good to see everybody on the same page,” said Schaub.

The Cold Lake Fighter Jets ended the game in celebration and are now off to Brampton, Ontario for AFL Nationals.

The team has set up a Go-Fund-Me page and is looking for support from their dedicated and loyal fans to help the Jets make it to Nationals.
