Lac La Biche a reception centre for NWT wildfire evacuees

As a massive wildfire is blazing in the Northwest Territories, a Lakeland community is one where evacuees will be heading.

Lac La Biche is one of four designated reception centres taking in evacuees as over 20,000 people are looking to leave the north in the midst of this dangerous blaze.

These centres are providing a variety of supports including evacuee registration, temporary lodging, food, hygiene, mental health supports and information packages on other supports that may be available.

The Behchoko/Yellowknife Fire is classified as out of control and currently sitting at almost 163,000 hectares.

“Albertans understand all too well how challenging and stressful it is to be evacuated from their homes due to wildfires, which is why we’re stepping up to help,” said Premier Danielle Smith.

“I want to reassure evacuees coming to Alberta that we are doing everything we can to make sure they have the supports they need.”
