Volunteer program hopes to give RCMP video clips faster during investigations
A new volunteer program is looking to streamline and ease access for RCMP members to get video footage of crimes.
Alberta RCMP have announced a project called CAPTURE (Community Assisted Policing Through the Use of Recorded Evidence) which would allow residents to sign up for a voluntary surveillance camera registry program.
Those who have video surveillance, and are willing to share video camera footage when requested, can sign up.
Now, this doesn’t replace officers from knocking on doors, but the RCMP believes it will help officers track down video evidence quicker in ongoing criminal investigations in RCMP jurisdictions.
Police will request portions of video and can then view them before asking for a copy.
This will not allow RCMP to have a live feed of your camera, they say. It is about viewing video that a user has already uploaded. Police would still need to ask for a copy.
