Pride event in St. Paul highlights showing “True Colourz”
Being comfortable with one’s sexuality is a theme in the month of June – Pride Month.
Pride St. Paul, established in 2019, is hosting another event to mark the occasion this Saturday at Mannawanis Native Friendship Centre with True Colourz Fest.
“Pride St. Paul is about celebrating diversity and celebrate who we are,” says organizer Lynda Young.
“These events that we’re organizing are meant for people to have a safe space to connect and to get to know people who are supportive and are welcoming. The idea is to create community cohesiveness and be welcoming to everybody.”
LGTBQ+ and allies are encouraged to come and participate in various activities, including interactive art, story reading, music, dance, and bingo. There are also draws and prizes for those in attendance.
While still a new group, Pride St. Paul is hoping to continue the momentum from their previous year’s events. This will be their third event.
“We have people coming to share their pride of who they are, people coming just to say, hey, you’re welcome to be who you are. And it’s just been wonderful,” Young said.
Run by volunteers, Pride St. Paul is hoping to expand and become a formal organization within the town. By adding members, they could do further events.
Right now, it’s been kept to the month of June. Highlighted by the theme of showing one’s true colours, there is also a free lunch, a photobooth, and a DJ.
The events have been welcomed by the community.
“I do understand that there are members of the community that are perhaps wary or afraid of what “LGBTQ people” are out to do,” said Young.
“But Pride St. Paul is about celebrating and being welcoming and our events are a safe space and it’s family friendly.”
The event is happening Saturday from 12:00-4:00pm at Mannawanis Native Friendship Centre.
