Bonnyville Cancer Clinic Run set for June 4
The Bonnyville Cancer Clinic Fun Run is coming up on June 4 for its second year in what will be an annual event in the town.
After the launch of its first year, the event raised $24,000 for the Bonnyville Cancer Clinic. This year, the set goal is $15,000 and the community has already raised just over $8,000.
The five-kilometre run/walk brings honour to cancer patients and their families and the local Bonnyville Cancer Clinic.
It will begin and end at the Bonnyville Splash Park and all are invited to attend with a $30 registration fee, the first 100 to sign up will receive a free cancer walk t-shirt and swag bag.
“I am a nurse at the cancer clinic and a couple of the nurses and I were discussing some of our patients that struggle financially, but don’t qualify for any help,” said Kelly Haygarth, Organizer.
“That’s why we did this because we wanted to help everybody, especially those living rural.”
Participants will walk or run on the road up to the dumping station and make their way back to the splash park using the walking trail. Sections of Lakeshore Drive will be blocked off prior to the walk which will begin at 12:00 p.m.
“We wanna bring awareness about the Bonnyville Cancer Clinic, a lot of people don’t realize that we have one here in Bonnyville, we also wanna give the opportunity for people to come and gather and support each other,” said Haygarth.
“It’s a way for people to give back if they have had treatment or know someone who has or is going through treatment. Sometimes people ask what they can do well. This is something that they can do.”
Another important aspect of holding the event is the struggles that patients in rural areas face.
“We are rural, and to bring awareness to these rural patients who face their own challenges and struggles, the amount of travel and accommodations, relying on other people to take them and it gets very costly,” said Haygarth.
The event will have a DJ and Cancer 86, a non-profit organization, setting up a table for the event.
“I just wanna thank CNRL for sponsoring our t-shirts and Cancer 86 for being our DJ and sponsoring us,” said Haygarth.
