Wildfire near Cold Lake First Nation contained

The wildfire in the southeast of Cold Lake First Nations has been contained, officials say, and there are no injuries to report.

At roughly 10:40pm on Thursday night, just over four hours from the issuing of the evacuation notice , an update on the situation was released to residents.

No houses have been lost the release states, despite the Alberta Evacuation Order saying one was burnt. However, there are damaged camper trailers.

An evacuation order from the province was issued at 6:22pm for everyone south of Township Road 614 and up to Range Road 24 in Cold Lake First Nation.

The fire originally began at 3:28pm. By 4:30pm, RCMP were on site to assist a potential evacuation.

Alberta Forestry Service arrived at 6:00pm.

Fire fighting crews have contained the blaze and will continue working throughout the night to eliminate residual hotspots.

Approximately 40 homes were evacuated successfully.

Residents are not permitted to return home yet, as a powerline is down in the area and it is still dangerous.
