Blue Quills to release preliminary findings of ground radar search
Officials will be releasing the findings today following last summer’s ground search at Blue Quills University, a former residential school.
Last August, University nuxełhot’įne thaaɁehots’į nistameyimâkanak Blue Quills (UnBQ) began the ground penetrating radar search for unmarked burial sites on school grounds near St. Paul.
The preliminary findings are just phase one of the search they intend to look at.
The process began in the spring of 2021, in the wake of the findings of 215 unmarked burial sites from the Kamloops Indian Residential School, in which many former residential school lands have been searched.
Four days of healing, including cultural and wellness supports and activities begin Wednesday at 9:00am with a ceremony, and the release of the preliminary findings.
Blue Quills has been working with an Indigenous led search team from the University of Alberta to conduct this research.
“We are thankful to our Elders and our Elders Senate who have guided us through ceremony and kindness to take great care during this process, to be respectful, compassionate, and patient,” a UnBQ press release says.
