Police have confirmed after checking surveillance videos that there was no evidence of a gun at the Centennial Centre during Saturday’s incident.

Bonnyville RCMP evacuated the building after it was believed a threat was made on Saturday evening during a U15 hockey tournament.

With rumours swirling, police searched the C2 and after checking out the facility, then allowed patrons back into the building.

In the days following, RCMP members conducted an “extensive” investigation, interviewing several people that were at the site and reviewing video surveillance.

The situation started when youths were asked to leave because of their behaviour, said S/Sgt. Sarah Parke.

“We had information from a caller, who did not have any first hand information of their own. And the description was that there might have been a gone and shots fired,” said Parke.

An off-duty officer was at the C2 at the time, who was able to confirm to on-duty members there were no shots fired.

The evacuation then took place.

The video surveillance showed that the youths never re-entered the building.

“The main driver for all the chaos was social media,” said Parke.

“We just to encourage people to get their information from either a trusted news source or directly from the RCMP, when they’re in the position to deliver the information. Because it just went from zero to 60 in a bad way.”
