Tales from the Timebox for November 29, 2022

It’s very rare to play an 8 pm minor hockey game on a weeknight when the kids are going to school. This past Thursday the U 15 team played against Cold Lake at 8 pm. As it turns out the Cold Lake players did not have school the next day so getting home at 1:30 pm or so didn’t matter to them. But even though they did not have school, they schooled our guys to the tune of 9 to 2 in favor of the Ice. The game started out close but the floodgates opened have way through the second period. Trayden ‘the Great’ Gadwa who celebrated his 14th birthday on Friday got an early birthday present for scoring his first goal ever. He also added an assist on the goal by Marcus Dion. Hawk Cardinal also getting an assist.

U13 Avalanche

Hats off to the U 13 team and parents. Another fine tournament was put on this past weekend at the A.G. Ross arena, this one was organized and worked by our U13 parents. Terrific job by everyone pulling their weight to get it done. And another great performance by our Avalanche team. They made it to the A final and won the gold medal with only 5 seconds left in the third period in a nail bitter of a game.

Friday night the Avalanche won over Beaumont 8 to 3 in the end, but even that one was close, 4 to 3 until the third period. ‘Wild Wyatt’ Fontaine with a four goal night, Remington ‘Steel’ Reynolds and Liam ‘Sledgehammer’ Swedgen with two each. Tristin ‘Bobcat’ Brousseau and Jaxon ‘Smitty’ Smith with two assists each.  William ‘Billy Bob’ Ballas, ‘Major Tom’ Melnyk, and Kestyn ‘Crocodile’ Quinney each with a helper.

Saturday was a little scary against the Whitemud team. The Avalanche team was down 7 to 3 after the first period. After a brief coach’s corner, they kicked it into gear in the second and third periods winning in the end 13 to 9. Wild Wyatt, Remington Steel and the Sledgehammer with the majority of goals. Jackson ‘J.R.’ Rawlake and Jaxon ‘Magic’ Marcoux with one goal each. A couple of apples each for our unsung hero’s on defense, Smitty and the Bobcat.

On Sunday afternoon the Avalanche hosted the South West Bandits in the final gold medal game. The Avalanche took a big three goal lead in the first period on goals by Wild Wyatt and Remington Steel. They then decided to lay back and watch the Bandits tie it up. Three all going into the third period, the Bandits would take the 4 to 3 lead but only for about .30 seconds,  when Remington Steel fired his sharpshooter to tie it at four all. With the clock ticking down and the crowd anticipating overtime to decide the winner, Wild Wyatt would score his third goal of the game with only 5 seconds left in regulation time. The Avalanche win! The Sledgehammer with three assists in this one.

In other Avs news

The U7 team traveled to Marwayne on the weekend to play in a tournament there. All the kids had a ton of fun and came home with a medal.

The U9 team played in Dewberry Saturday morning. Cohen ‘ Big Horn’ Brousseau was between the pipes in this one for the first time ever. We didn’t get a report on goals and assists, but we’re told that they also had a great game and a lot of fun.

Our U11 team traveled on the road Friday night to Chavin winning the game 10 to 7. ‘General Lee’ Barstad strapping on the big goalie pads and coming up with some outstanding highlight saves. Hudson the ‘Bull’ Brousseau who is almost impossible to contain when he sees the red light,  busted through with six goals. Ava ‘ the Red Baron’ Rawlake fired a goal and added an assist. Defenseman Hudson ‘Hammer’ Krankowski, hammered in a goal and added an assist. Tor ‘Tornado’ Aarbo tore a path through the team to the crease scoring a goal as well.

Saturday afternoon the U 18 had a huge 5 to 2 win down in Wainwright. The Bisons are always one of the better teams in the league. ‘Mick Jagger’ Fontaine with a goal and two assists. His brother ‘the Kamikaze Kid’ Kade with a goal. Kaleb ‘Formula One’ Flamand, Brenndon ‘Blue Line’ Haesch, and Gavin’ Green Light’ Kadutski all with goals. ‘Top Gunner’ Crawford, Seth ‘Motorman’ Morton and ‘Saint Nic’ Penner all with assists.

The U18 hosted Dewberry /Marwayne on Sunday night. The Avalanche lost by a close 2 to 1 score. Only three penalties per side in this one. Weird!!

Out of towners

In out of town action this past weekend. My youngest granddaughter, Vienna ‘Little Bug’ Colbourne played on the Lakeland Jaguars, a U11 female team that won four games in Calgary this past weekend winning the gold medal in the final.
