SPORTSHOUND: Like Kissing Your Sister

Tales from the Timebox for October 24, 2022

They say that a tie is like kissing your sister. If that’s the case, then two ties must be like kissing your twin sisters! One thing is for sure though, it looks like the U15 Avalanche team is playing in the right tier and that their games will all be competitive. The U-5 Avalanche played two games this past weekend and tied both of them. On Friday night at home, they hosted Wainwright, the game ending in a four-all tie. Recently signed player, Kaleal Jackson with two goals. Brendan ‘ Buzzsaw’ Kadutski and Quinton ‘ Rampage’ Dumont-Quinney scored one goal each. Three assists for the free-wheeling defenseman Braylee’ Little Willy ‘ Lesyk. His partner in crime on the blue line, Kale’ the Hawk’ Ockerman with an assist. Sunday the U15 travelled on the road to the home of the big sausage, Mundare.   The Avalanche played to a two-all tie against Vegreville. Perhaps the team is a combination of Vegreville and Mundare?   Kaleal Jackson with a goal and an assist. Buzzsaw scored the second goal, ‘ Rampage’ with the assist.

U9 Avalanche

At the U9 level, teams play on half ice, they don’t keep score on the clock and the lines change on the fly. But trust me, parents and grandparents know when their little Jonny puts one in. The U-9 Avalanche played Saturday in Dewberry/ Marwayne. Even though they didn’t keep score, we do know there were a whole bunch of goals scored by Jase’  the Jackel’ Malo. Also some goals by Cohen’ Big Horn’  Brousseau, Aspyn ‘ Machine Gun Kelly,  Charlie ‘Chickadee’ Davis, ‘Jumbo Jay’ Large, and the newest player to the team Tylus Gadwa.  Benjamin Saddleback was the goalie for this game and was Benny on the spot stopping the puck.  On Sunday the U 9’s traveled to Vermilion, ‘Machine Gun Kelly’ with two, Landon ‘ Lights Out’ St. Arnault, the Jackel, and another new player Terasleigh Nepoose-Gadwa all scoring. Yes, we better fine Vermilion, because they did keep score. The Avalanche losing this one 6 to 5.

U11 Avalanche

The U11 Avalanche played up in Boyle on Saturday coming home with a big 10 to 7 win. Hudson ‘ the Bull’ Brousseau with a double hat trick, scoring six goals and adding an assist.  Two goals and two assists for steady defenseman Hudson ‘the Hammer’ Krankowski.  Rookie Hunter Pankiw with a goal and two assists. Kendal Morin adding a goal. Stetson ‘ Shack’ Reynolds strapping on the goalie gear doing an awesome job of keeping the puck out.

On Sunday they hosted Kitscoty winning this one by a ton of goals. Kitscoty will likely be getting bumped down a tier for next week. Way too many goals here to list them all, but we do want to mention that Ava ‘the Red Baron’ Rawlake had a hat trick, and Lennox ‘All Out’ St. Arnault scored a couple. And also that the newest player to the team, Victoria Page was on the sheet with a couple of assists.

U13 Avalanche

The U13 team had a bit of a reality check this past weekend playing up in tier two and meeting some tougher competition than the previous week. They still did alright mind you and will likely end up staying in tier two.  Of course, everyone likes to win, but it’s better to be challenged than to have easy games. The players will learn how to play as a team rather than one or two players always racking up a bunch of goals. Friday night up in Bonnyville they lost 13 to 8. The game was close for the first two periods, the Avalanche still not quite in game shape running out of gas in the third. Four goals for ‘Wild Wyatt’ Fontaine. Remington ‘ Steel’ Reynolds, Liam ‘ Sledgehammer’ Swedgen, Jaxon ‘ Magic’ Marcoux, and William’ Billy Bob’ Ballas all scored one each. Owen ‘ Olie the Goalie’ Grykuliak facing 33 shots.

On Sunday at home against Cold Lake, the Avalanche were winning 6 to 5 with only .32 seconds left in regulation time. The Freeze put on the pressure and tied it up just before the final buzzer. The Avalanche tank once again ran on fumes. ‘Wild Wyatt’ with a hat trick, ‘Remington Steel’ with a goal and an assist. ‘Magic ‘with a goal and three assists. Billy Bob and Smitty also with assists. Goalie Theo ‘ Longhorn’ Loughran -Quinney facing 23 shots.

U18 Avalanche

The U18 Avalanche played at home Saturday night defeating Provost 4 to 2. This was the first time in many, many years that our team had won against Provost, and what made it more significant, they did it with a very short bench. Seven of the Avalanche regular players were off in Lac La Biche at a big volleyball tournament. ‘ Mick Jagger’ Fontaine with two goals. “Saint Nic’ Penner with a goal and an assist. Dean’ the Machine’ Ockerman also with a goal and an assist. Wyatt’ Wildman’ Pavoll and Josef ‘ Big Red’ Theriault also with an assist.

On Sunday the U18 travelled to the Border City to take on the Blazers. This time they had a full bench but ran into a hot Lloydminster goalie who stoned them many times. Our guys peppered him with 40 shots losing this one by 3 to zip.
