On October 21, 2022, a Municipal District of Bonnyville Peace Officer was acquitted of careless driving.

The officer was charged following a fatal accident in Ardmore in August 2021. The Peace Officer had attempted to pull over a vehicle for a traffic safety violation. The car failed to stop for the Peace Officer and did not stop at the intersection of Highway 28 and Secondary Highway 892, colliding with another vehicle.

Two out of six occupants of the sedan have died as a result of injuries sustained in this collision; a 25-year-old female and a 19-year-old male, both from the Elizabeth Métis Settlement. The four other occupants of the sedan were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The two occupants of the pickup truck were assessed for minor injuries by Emergency Medical Services on the scene.

In August of 2021, the officer was charged with Careless Driving of the Traffic Safety Act.  The officer has been on administrative duty since the accident.  Late last week, the office was acquitted of the charges.

More information may be released as it becomes available.
