Iron Horse Ultra 100 sees 168 runners in its 14th year

The Iron Horse Ultra 100 has become a staple for kicking off Fall in the Lakeland region. In its 14th year, the event saw 168 runners register for the run, which challenges both body and mind, as athletes compete to complete 100 miles in a 24-hour period.

The trail, which follows the Iron Horse Trail, is described on the Iron Horse Ultra’s website, the course covers varied trails: from sidewalks, range roads, loose gravel, old train beds, farmer’s fields, and more.

Runners enter as a solo or as a team. The solo runners take on the entire 100 miles, while the team can split the race among members. The event also offers a 100 km run for solo and teams.

Not everyone completes the run, in the most challenging category, the 100 mile solo 12 runners were registered eight finished, two did not start and two did not finish. There were no runner disqualified.

“Every year I am amazed not only by the dedication of the runners but also the beautiful community bond our runners and volunteers have formed over the weekend. St. Paul, Elk Point and the area should be proud of what we put on here. We are a favourite event for many ultra runners and it is because of the community that supports us and the people who come out to help.” – Monique Poulin, Event Organizer

Special thank you to the Volunteers

Monique Poulin, the organizer of the run, explained the race would not be possible without volunteers and sponsors. “This year we had about 80 volunteers between marking, monitoring, and picking up trails, working aid stations, and picking up and returning supplies. Preparing runner supplies, and food.” Even with the tremendous efforts of the 80 volunteer force, Poulin said the event could always use more volunteers.
“We could not do it without the support of the town and community businesses.”
Not to diminish the efforts and support of all the volunteers and sponsors, Poulin did want to highlight a few key sponsors that have really helped out the race. Including, Jagger at Eye Tech Solutions who handles all the timing chips and logistics. Cold Lake Search and Rescue assist with runner safety and the Elk Point Volunteer Fire Fighters help with traffic control at busier stations.
There is a runner who has come three years in a row from Ontario Richard Bowers who flies in early marks trail Friday and runs Saturday. I also have a couple from the wainwright area who run 100km Saturday and then come in the middle of the night to check in the finishing runners
