Voyageurs host Barons; Cold Lake travels to St. Paul: Wheatland Football League
Week 4 of the Wheatland Football League rages on tonight with a set of high school football games.
A battle of the Lakeland is set to kickoff between the St. Paul Lions and Cold Lake Royals. The Lions are coming off of a valiant effort against the perennial contenders in the Holy Rosary Raiders last weekend, which saw them battle to a 29-11 defeat.
They’ll take on a Royals team this is feeling good after a resounding victory over the Bonnyville Voyageurs 37-9.
The Voyageurs will host the Lloyd Comp Barons at Walsh Field looking for a bounceback performance after going 1-2.
“We did not bring the same game we brought last week, we didn’t bring the same physicality, we didn’t bring the same execution. I don’t know think we get off the bus, figuratively speaking,” coach Larry Godziuk said after the game last week.
“My philosophy for the last several years is the most important game is that first playoff game, which is October 21. Doesn’t matter where you finish. If you lose it, your season is done. So of course we’d like to win more games and less games. But we’re going to aim at getting better every week.”
Tanner Blake has stepped in as a first-year quarterback after playing in different positions for a couple years. He’s learning how to advance the ball down the field through an aerial attack, to match his willingness to scramble.
“We just have to work harder next week. We play a tough, Tier II team in Lloyd Comp. It is a big school, they’ll have a big squad as well. And we’re just gonna have to try and play as healthy as we can and see if we can get through the game and learn some things and try and get better,” said Godziuk.
