GALLERY: NDTR events across the Lakeland
With September 30 now being the National Day of Truth & Reconciliation, the Lakeland area was full of events to hear stories from those affected by Residential Schools and wear orange shirts to drive the Every Child Matters movement.
The Lakeland Society for Truth & Reconciliation held a procession through Bonnyville on Thursday evening, before a full day of events and workshops at the Bonnyville & District Centennial Centre on Friday.
“It’s all about recognition. Recognizing the history, making sure people are visible and vocal about what happened with Residential Schools, about the experiences of Residential School survivors and recognizing those that didn’t come back,” said Rosa John.
Vehicles were decked out with the Treaty Six Flag, Metis flag, and Every Child Matters flag as they drove through town.
In Cold Lake, the City hosted a flag raising ceremony with various speakers as well to recognize the history as well.
Portage College also hosted an exhibition game between the Voyageurs and Briercrest in Frog Lake to recognize their strengthened ties to First Nations.
In the morning, they held a Sunrise ceremony on campus as well.
