Pontiacs flip Hennessey to Blackfalds for defenceman and forward

The Bonnyville Pontiacs have acquired defenceman (‘04) Kaiden Bugera and forward (‘03) Kobe Assam from the Blackfalds Bulldogs in exchange for goaltender (‘02) Matthew Hennessey.

Bugera played 43 games with the Bulldogs last season, earning 3 goals and 5 assists, while piling up 49 penalty minutes. Previously, the Calgary native went to the Edge School U18 Prep and played at the Alberta Cip in 2018-19.

Assam played 15 games with Blackfalds in 2021-22 after being acquired from the Alberni Valley Bulldogs. The Kelowna, British Columbia native accumulated 4 goals and 7 assists in 35 total games last season.

“We are extremely excited to bring Kaiden and Kobe to the Pontiacs organization,” said associate General Manager Neil Langridge.

“They bring a youth and size to our lineup and fans can expect a solid work ethic and physical play from both of them.

“We want to thank Matt Hennessey for his two years as a Pontiac and we know he will excel in Blackfalds and will have a great opportunity to achieve his goals of furthering his education and playing career. Matt truly left the Pontiacs jersey in a better place then when he arrived and for that the organization is grateful.”

The local Junior A team has made a series of commitment announcements as well in recent days. Local product Nicholas Beaudoin, along with Mitchell Spranklin, Brayden Vandenbilche, and Ethan Look are some of the new faces that will don the Yaks jersey next season.

It’s believed there are still more new acquisition announcements on the way.
