Mallaig and Assumption basketball teams return from Provincials
Three local high school basketball teams represented their schools and communities at Provincials last weekend.
In the 1A girls draw down in Cremona, roughly 80 kilometres northwest of Calgary, Mallaig lost to the host school 58-35 in the tournament tipoff. In their second contest against Acme, Mallaig fell again by a score of 56-24.
But in their final game of the tournament, the Stingers rebounded and closed out victorious 62-51 to Breton.
Assumption’s girls team in a similar area of the province in Oilfields High School in Black Diamond won the opener 55-37 vs Ecole St. Joseph. Later on Thursday, the Crusaders met the tournament’s number 1 seed in Calgary Christian and were handed a 89-23 loss. Vying for 7th place overall in the tournament, Assumption ran up against Oilfields the host and lost 53-33 to finish 8th overall.
Meanwhile, Assumption’s male counterparts battled at Provincials at Bearspaw Christian School in Calgary. It was a good fight, but the Crusaders lost 66-53 to John Maland in the opener. The team then showed their grit with a 73-70 win over Stirling. That set up a battle with Glenmary in the consolation final, which again was a close affair, but Assumption lost 71-63 to finish. They finish 7th overall in the tournament.
That signals the end of the basketball seasons for high schools, who will turn their attention to badminton and track and field.
