Driver of service truck airlifted to Edmonton after accident with loaded crude oil tanker

A motor vehicle accident (MVA) on the Lea Park Bridge yesterday between a loaded crude oil tanker and a service truck sent two people to the hospital, one via STARS Air Ambulance.

On December 1, two people had to be extricated from a mangled pick-up that was involved in the accident by Marwayne Fire & Rescue, Dewberry Fire & Rescue, and County #9-1.

County of Vermilion River Fire Chief Kirk Hughes told Lakeland Connect, “Upon arriving on-scene, fire crews were faced with a difficult scenario that required skilled rescue techniques.”

One of the involved vehicles received considerable damage and had two patients entrapped, Fire Chief Hughes added.

Crews worked quickly and efficiently when time mattered most to free the trapped individuals.

“A coordinated and delicate extrication commenced with experienced rescue technicians from Marwayne Fire and Dewberry Fire,” Fire Chief Hughes said. “The quick and effective use of our extrication equipment allowed our firefighters to gain access to the patients, allowing EMS to begin critical medical aid.”

Utilizing hydraulic cutters and spreaders, firefighters managed to remove the doors and pillar. One patient was transported by ground ambulance to Lloydminster and one patient was sent to Edmonton via STARS Air Ambulance.

“It was a difficult rescue made easier by the competency of our first responders and the coordination on scene by multiple agencies,” Fire Chief Hughes told Lakeland Connect. “Thanks to our dispatcher at EC911, RCMP Kitscoty Detachment members, CVR Community Peace Officers, RCMP Traffic Analyst, Medavie Health Services West, STARS Air Ambulance, and the Protective Services Coordinator for all their hard work on and behind the scenes.”
