NLPS receives funding for Learning Disruption

The Northern Lights Public Schools Board (NLPS) has been receiving questions from parents and guardians about how NLPS will be using the Learning Disruption Funding announced by Alberta Education for students in grades 2 and 3.

Even though the Government announced last spring that funding would be available for school divisions, NLPS only learned how much funding it was eligible for within the last couple of weeks.

Nicole Garner is the Communications Officer for NLPS.

“In total, Northern Lights will be receiving a total of $348,390 to provide supports to 711 students in the areas of literacy and numeracy,” Garner said. “NLPS is currently consulting with other school jurisdictions throughout the province to help determine what intervention strategies may be most effective.”

Garner says once NLPS has identified which strategies they will be using, they will be meeting with school administrators to determine what implementation looks like at each school.

“We will also be assessing students to determine how to best meet their needs and provide resources to those schools,” Garner said. “If you are concerned about your child’s progress in these areas, or any others, we encourage you to have a conversation with your child’s teacher.”

Parent teacher interviews are coming up at most schools and that is a good time to share your concerns and discuss what supports are available to your child and whether or not they might benefit from the intervention strategies NLPS will be implementing later this year, Garner added.

Alberta Education has also announced that school divisions can access funding for students who entered Grade 1 this fall. NLPS will be applying for funding to provide learning supports for students in that grade as well.
