Fagnan’s on St. FX to play key role in Loney Bowl
Two Bonnyville football players are playing in the Loney Bowl this weekend in pursuit of a national championship.
Silas and Isaac Fagnan, quarterback and receiver, respectively, for the St. FX men’s football team will be playing in the Atlantic University Sport championship game on Saturday against Bishop’s University.
St. FX has been great all season, carrying a perfect 6-0 regular season record into last weekend’s semifinal game before winning 27-22 against Acadia to punch their ticket to the Loney Bowl.
If St. FX wins, they will be one of four teams remaining in the nation competing for the Vanier Cup, the prize given to the top U Sport football team.
These local brothers have been elite in their categories throughout the season. Third-year QB Silas Fagnan led the AUS in passing yards with 1297, touchdowns with 10, completion percentage over 10 attempts 68 per cent, while only turning over the ball five times. He also put together 134 yards on the ground with three TDs.
It’s a big accomplishment for a player who is starting his first games under center this season.
Meanwhile Isaac isn’t too far behind in receiving categories. Isaac is second amongst receiving yards with 393 on 27 catches. He’s also pulled in four touchdown grabs as his brother’s favourite target.
The Xmen’s defence is stout too, ranked first in fumbles recovered, interceptions, sacks, and defensive touchdowns.
They are two of the brothers who have played for the Xmen. Older brother Jeremy retired in 2019 and then played a year of pro in Mexico.
The Loney Bowl gets going at 11:00am MST on Saturday. A victory will put St. Francis Xavier through to either the Uteck or Mitchell Bowl.
They have beaten Bishop’s twice so far this season, 32-29 and 48-21.
