On Sept. 12, shortly before 4:45 p.m., Elk Point RCMP responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 646 near Range Road 44B, involving a semi-truck with tank/trailer carrying a petroleum product. The lone 47-year-old male driver, of Vermilion, Alta., was taken via ground ambulance to Vermillion, and shortly thereafter was transported to an Edmonton area hospital via STARS ambulance. The driver sustained serious injuries and is still in hospital, currently in stable condition.
During this collision, the tank/trailer and the contents spilled down the east ditch of Highway 646 towards Whitney Lake, in Whitney Lake Provincial Park. Elk Point RCMP are working in partnership with Elk Point Fire and Rescue Department, who have been on scene digging trenches to prevent the further contamination of soil and water. Steps are being taken to address environmental concerns with the appropriate agencies.
Highway 646 was shutdown for a few hours, but one lane of traffic has since resumed travel.
Elk Point RCMP investigation is ongoing. An Alberta RCMP Collision Reconstruction was engaged and is assisting with this investigation.
