A shooting in Lac La Biche in the early morning hours has sent one man to hospital in Edmonton.

Cpl. Teri-Ann Bakker is a Media Relations Officer with the RCMP.

“On September 7, Lac La Biche RCMP, shortly before 4:45 a.m. were contacted because they were advised that there was an adult male with gunshot wounds,” Cpl. Bakker told Lakeland Connect. “The adult male was transported to an Edmonton area hospital. Police do not believe it was a random act and public safety is not at risk. At this time, the victim is receiving medical treatment and is in stable condition.”

Lakeland Connect was contracted by a family member of the victim to confirm that the shooting was possibly drug-related. The family member told us that her cousin who uses crystal meth was at the Almac Hotel before the shooting and collapsed at a nearby homeless shelter. The people at the shelter phoned the ambulance.

“He got shot near the hip area,” the family member said. “And was rushed to Edmonton for emergency surgery.”

The RCMP did not confirm the location of the shooting, where the person was shot, or if it was drug-related.

“Based on the information that they know at this time, they’re waiting to speak with the victim further to obtain additional information to proceed with an investigation,” Cpl. Bakker said. “There are no suspects in custody.”

Lakeland Connect will bring you more information when available.
