Manager of Infrastructure Services presents Bonnyville Regional Airport Project Update to M.D. Council
Improvements at the Bonnyville Regional Airport have been ongoing throughout the summer since Administration was given the direction to perform the improvements.
As work at the airport is substantially completed, on August 25, Administration provided an update to M.D. of Bonnyville Council of the
progress and budget status to date.
Bryan Bespalko is the Interim General Manager of Infrastructure Services for the M.D. of Bonnyville.
“Infrastructure Services started working on the airport improvements on June 15, 2021,” Bespalko told Council at Wednesday’s meeting. “Base work was performed on the taxiway to prepare for a cold mix surface as well as connection of the taxiway to the runway.”
Bespalko says additional work at the airport included drainage improvements, parking lot repair and resurfacing.
“This work was completed August 12, 2021,” Bespalko said. “Work still to be completed in 2021 is lighting replacement, seeding, and access improvements.”
Bespalko says new airport lighting will illuminate the aircraft parking area and the entire length of the runway. Taxiway lighting is not
included in the current lighting option; however, high intensity reflectors will be installed along the taxiway to improve taxiway delineation from the runway to the parking area.
“A total approved budget for the airport improvement project is $1.8M for surface works with an additional $400,000 for lighting replacement,” Bespalko said. “As of the last generated financial report, the funds spent on this project total approximately $660,000 for construction with only an additional $257,000 to be forthcoming for the supply and installation of the runway lighting.”
The total expected expenses for this project, including approximately $20,000 for a contingency, is estimated to be $970,000.
