Lakeland Catholic School Division students celebrate Earth Day

Lakeland Catholic School Division students celebrated Earth Day last week.

Earth Day is an annual event to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First held in1970, it now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally in 193 countries.

On Thursday, April 22, Students at Holy Cross Elementary participated in a variety of environmental activities inside and outside of the school.

Val Hanson is the principal at Holy Cross Elementary in Cold Lake.

“Classes took time to remove garbage from their recess zones, making the grounds ready for summer,” Hanson told Lakeland Connect. “All classes took time during the day to do a special age-appropriate activities such as a virtual nature field trips.  We encourage our students to show respect for God’s creation by treating every day like Earth Day.”

Students at St Dominic Elementary School in Bonnyville celebrated Earth Day by rolling up their sleeves and helping to complete a clean up on the playground.

Michelle Kaminski is the principal at St Dominic Elementary School.

“A few other classes also learned more about Earth Day by watching videos about the meaning and purpose of this important day,” Kaminski said. “It is critical that students learn about protecting the environment, as they are the future stewards of the earth and we all need to ensure that we protect our planet in years to come.”
