Positive COVID-19 case confirmed at Smoky Lake school

There is a school in the Lakeland area that has a person who has tested positive for COVID-19 as of Wednesday.

Alberta Health Services has notified Aspen View Public Schools that a positive case of COVID-19 has been diagnosed in an individual from H.A. Kostash (HAK) School in Smoky Lake, the school division said in a press release.

HAK students and staff who had close contact with the individual have been directed to stay home.

Anyone considered a close contact of a case of COVID-19 is contacted directly by Alberta Health Services with further direction.

“Alberta Health Services is working closely with Aspen View and HAK administration to ensure the necessary steps are taken to protect the health and safety of students and staff,” said superintendent Neil O’Shea in the press release.

The Alberta Government’s virus data map shows two active cases within Smoky Lake County as of Wednesday evening.

To protect privacy, the school division said no further case details will be provided.

HAK continues to operate with current protocols in place for all other students and staff.

Parents and guardians, as well as any staff, are asked to monitor for any signs or symptoms of COVID-19.

The Alberta Health daily checklist can be found here. Please remember to complete the checklist each day prior to attending school.
