Update: Bonnyville man faces 24 charges after Cold Lake Mountie assaulted

The man who allegedly beat a police officer in the Walmart parking lot in Cold Lake late Tuesday afternoon is facing 24 charges including attempted murder.

Travis Slipchuk, 44-year-old from Bonnyville, is facing attempted murder, theft/attempted theft of a weapon from a peace officer (x2), assault with a weapon, theft of vehicle (x4), fail to comply with a probation order (x2) and failure to comply with a release order.

The attack was described as a violent assault by RCMP and an eyewitness said the perpetrator was brutalizing the police officer.

The Mountie is currently in hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Following a bail hearing, Slipchuk has been remanded into custody.

He is next scheduled to appear in Cold Lake Provincial Court on July 22

The investigation into this incident continues with the assistance of the RCMP Major Crimes Unit, police said.
