Cold Lake grad receives Lynn McFarlane Scholarship

A scholarship to help those with disabilities continue advancing their learning was presented to a recent Assumption High School grad ten days ago.

The Lynn McFarlane Scholarship for 2020 was awarded to Dustin Deep on June 22 who has been accepted into the environmental sciences program at Lakeland College in the fall.

This is the second scholarship award that has been given out in her name to recognize a student with challenges to attending post-secondary or to pursue education to better serve those with a disability.

McFarlane was born and raised in the Cold Lake area and graduated from Grand Centre High School in 1987.

She went on to have a 30 year career at Tri-City Value Drug Mart, despite having down syndrome.

Employer Bob Mattice was her boss and friend for most of this 30 years.

When she retired two years ago, they decided to develop this scholarship with donations from the community.

McFarlane has been an active volunteer in Cold Lake and when she was younger represented our community at national, provincial and regional Special Olympic events.

“It was an honor to recognize Dustin this evening as he begins his adventures and pursues his dreams,” said Audrey McFarlane, executive director of the CanFASD Research Network.
