Chalking the Walk to shed light on mental health

Inspirational messages outside of Duclos School and the post office in Bonnyville.

Schools in the Lakeland are spreading inspirational messages to celebrate Mental Health week.

Mental Health Week runs from May 4-10 and Duclos School wanted to bring awareness to this key component of one’s overall wellbeing, especially during these uncertain times.

“As a school, we wanted to do something that not only brought awareness to mental health, but we also wanted to show our appreciation for all of our frontline workers, for our essential workers out there, and something that could really connect the community as a whole,” said Janice Baillargeon.

“What we have done today is an activity we’re calling Chalk the Walk. What that is, is are we not only doing our own sidewalk, but we’re also doing the sidewalks of those essential businesses, just to show our appreciation. Some words of encouragement, some pictures and just to really brighten everyone’s day.”

These messages were written outside the Bonnyville Health Centre, clinic, the pharmacies, grocery stores, RCMP office, Bonnylodge, the BRFA Fire Station, and many others.

Whether it’s “love, peace, and chicken grease” or “if we stand together we change the world,” you are encouraged to leave your note of inspiration on your sidewalk.

“We are encouraging all the families to get out there and chalk your own walk. Once you do take a picture, send it to us on Facebook, so that we can all share the artwork together but just really getting out there and spreading the love,” said Baillargeon.

At Cold Lake High School, staff and students are posting pictures on their Facebook page for their “Hats on for Mental Health” initiative.
