Canadian government closing border to non-citizens

Published On: March 16, 2020By

The federal government of Canada has announced that they are closing the border to non-citizens with rare exceptions, any person showing symptoms will be banned from travelling abroad, and asymptomatic Canadians away from home will be supported by the federal government, said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday.

He said the government will be closing the borders to all non-citizens or permanent residents.

This measure has certain exemptions for air crews, diplomats, immediate family members of Canadian residents and US citizens.

Airlines will receive the formal order to ban all travellers with symptoms from stepping on an airplane.

Airlines will do a basic assessment on everyone’s health based on the recommendations of the Public Health Agency of Canada.

Any person with symptoms will not be able to enter Canada.

To help asymptomatic Canadians away from home, Trudeau said the government will set up a support program for those who need to go on a plane.

Travellers will be able to get financial assistance to cover the costs of coming home or temporarily covering their basic needs in waiting to come back to Canada.

Starting Wednesday, international airports in Toronto, Montreal Vancouver and Calgary will be the only airports receiving international travellers.

Domestic flights and flights from United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean will not be affected by this measure.

Travel restrictions will not apply to trade or businesses.

Trudeau said all non-essential travel is discouraged at this time and that it is now the time for Canadians abroad to return while it is still possible to do so.

Upon arriving, you must self-isolate for 14 days.
