Cold Lake RCMP arrest three in targeted home invasion

Cold Lake RCMP in partnership with the Bonnyville RCMP, RCMP Police Dog Services (PDS), RCMP Forensic Identification Section, Bonnyville and Cold Lake General Investigative Section (GIS) teams are continuing to investigate a targeted home invasion with firearms which took place in the early hours of Jan. 7, 2020.

On Jan. 7, 2020, at approximately 5:00 a.m., three armed male suspects forced their way into a residence in the Brady Heights Neighbourhood in Cold Lake South. Two of the armed suspect’s were taken into custody on the scene without incident. The third suspect fled in a stolen vehicle.

On Jan. 8, 2020, the third suspect turned himself into police and was arrested for unrelated charges after the stolen vehicle was located at his residence.

As a result of this investigation the RCMP has seized a two pump action shot gun, an SKS rifle, crack cocaine, Canadian currency and an imitation handgun.

Justin Michael Kellerman (37) of Ardmore, Alta., was arrested and charged with 22 offences, some of which include:

  • Robbery with a firearm
  • Break and enter with intent
  • Pointing a firearm
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Uttering threats
  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine
  • Assault
  • Disobeying court order

Jason James Cardinal (32) of Elizabeth Metis Settlement, Alta., was arrested and charged with 17 offences, some of which include:

  • Robbery with a firearm
  • Break and enter with intent
  • Pointing a firearm
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Uttering threats
  • Assault
  • Disobeying court order

Both accused were remanded into custody after judicial hearings and will be appearing in Cold Lake Provincial Court on Jan. 22, 2020.

The third suspect who fled the residence in a stolen vehicle has been arrested and charges in relation to this incident are currently pending.

“The prompt response to a call for assistance led to the apprehension of two armed and dangerous suspect’s,” said Staff Sergeant Scott Buchanan, Cold Lake Detachment Commander. “Through further investigation we were able to locate and arrest the third suspect.”

As this matter is now before the courts, no further information will be provided.
