SPERD School Board By-Election
The St. Paul Education Regional Division No. 1 board of trustees has passed a resolution to hold a by-election on November 12, 2019, for the vacant seat in subdivision D.
As a result of two resignations, vacancies exist in subdivisions B and D. Regulations mandate that at least one seat be filled. As the Board is considering a complete review of its electoral ward distribution, it felt it would be prudent to just fill the one seat rather than elect a new trustee for a seat that may not be there in the next general election.
Board Chair Heather Starosielski stated that the region has seen many changes since its original structure was established in 1995 and given the current financial picture, it is a good time to examine governance makeup. The Board commented that residents of subdivision B will not be without representation as trustees Ruven Rajoo and Lorne Young have been assigned to cover this area on an interim basis. Any changes to the overall ward structures would not be effective until the next general election scheduled for October 2021.
Nominations will be accepted effective immediately until noon October 1, 2019.
Subdivision D splits St. Paul along Hwy 29 and extends south to Hwy 646. A complete map and additional by-election information will be available on the Division website shortly. Notices outlining nomination and by-election details will be posted in the St. Paul Journal over the coming weeks.
