Drag racing in Bonnyville to kick off on Saturday

Start. Your. Engines!

The Bonnyville Gear Grabbers first annual drag races are this Saturday at the Bonnyville Regional Airport.

Organizer with the Gear Grabbers, Shon Gamache, said it’s been just about year they’ve worked to get drag races to the lakeland area.

After a test run in June, it’s now time to put on a show.

“[It’s] A great team of vonunteers and committee members, club members that have really come together to make this happen. Of course without the support of the Town, the M.D., all of our sponsors, this wouldn’t be happened here this weekend. It’s pretty exciting,” said Gamache.

The eighth-mile races kick off at 10am with time trials and head-to-head races at 1pm.

“Depending on car count, likely you’ll get three runs and that dials in your time. So when you’re racing, we know what you’re racing against, then the racing will begin and the eliminations will start,” said Trent Law with the Gear Grabbers.

This is the first of two drag racing events; the one afterward is Saturday, Sept. 14 at the Bonnyville Regional Airport.

Racers can come at 8am to register their vehicle in the races, at a fee of $60.

Spectators can come down at 10am to watch the action for $10 and children 12-years-old and younger get in for free.

“There is some other airport races for sure in Alberta, Vergrevile, Povost, Hanna to name a few, but nothing really here in northeastern Alberta.

“There’s quite a large group of car enthuasists in this area and we want to satisfy their need to race their vehicles,” said Gamache.

“We’re welcoming beginners, amateurs, experienced racers. We want you guys to come out.”
